27 miles 7/31/2010

Today, I was only supposed to run 24 miles.

A few weeks ago, I tweaked my schedule so that I would run 24 this weekend and 27 the following.

Today, was going to be a cool day, high of 72. Perfect running conditions.

I parked on Thurman, almost 1 mile away from the gates of Leif Erickson. I ran up to the gates and up to Wildwood via Wild Cherry. I had forgotten how steep Wild Cherry is and walked some, didn't want to trash my legs already. I took a left on Wildwood, ran .30 past Birch, ran back up and past Wild Cherry all the way to Firelane 1, turned around. A little past this, I hear someone call out "Are you Jeannie?" I am thinking, oh no, this can't be good. He asked me if I was one of his Facebook friends. I couldn't recall his name at first, but a moment later I did. I didn't recognize him because of my flaw. We made small talk and then I ran off. He caught up with me about a 1/2 mile later, scaring me, but not on purpose. He only asked how far I was going today. We talked some more, but he was running faster than I normally do and I was feeling dizzy running behind him. After chatting for a short while, I said goodbye. I ran .30 past Birch, turned around and went back down Wild Cherry, eating my first 1/2 of my PBJ sandwich. I ran to my car, which was at mile 12, filled up my camelback and grabbed another sandwich. I ran up to Leif again and calculated that I would need to turn around at mile 18. Well blame it on Rhianna's song S.O.S. as I now was using my IPOD. I thought, "you know I am feeling really good" All my other runs, I felt like crap, but today was different and who knows what next weekend would be like. I would now just have to go 1 1/2 miles more. So I went for it. And besides, being on Leif, there is only one way back, you turn around and go back. So an out and back was perfect. Strangely, when I got to 19.5 miles, I kid you not, it was right in front of the landslide which was blocked off to keep people out. I turned around and was starting to feel it. But it wasn't until mile 21.5 that things really started to hurt and my moments of feeling good didn't last very long. But, I persevered, hardly walked. I would purposely play a favorite song more than once and said just run to the end of the song. Or I got excited when I saw that I was 2 3/4 miles away from the start. I did things like that. Oh and believe it or not, my attitude improved when I smiled at people, even at mile 24. At 26.17 miles, I was so happy about having ran another marathon and just as 26.20 came, Marilyn Manson's song the Beautiful People came on. Now, a few months prior, I would have changed the song, but for whatever reason, I actually like the song now. I thought that I would walk from 26.20 to 27.00, but I thought walking .80 would be too boring. So, I ran it all the way back to the car.

It's now hours later and I feel better today than I did last week at only 22 miles.

My birth stories

There is not a mother in this world that believes her birth story is unique and special. And this is true. As a previous Doula, all births are indeed unique.

I think however both of mine tell a story.I'll start with my 2nd daughter, my last delivery.

When I delivered Kayla, my water broke at about 11 Pm and to the hospital I went. When I got there, I immediately told the nurses that I wanted an epidural as soon as I could. I remember how horrible those contractions were from my first birth. They told me that I could have one as soon as I was so many centimeters dilated. They checked me right away and I was already dilated enough to have an epidural. Kayla was coming fast. They discovered that she had also gone from a normal birthing position to breech in just 2 days. I remember the little bugger turning. They said they would perform a c-section, fine by me. But, waiting for the surgeon was not a fun experience. I had to try as hard as I could to prevent from pushing. Strange I know, but I tried hard to keep her in. They wheeled me to the surgical room and the surgeon says he can actually have me deliver her naturally. I declined. What was I thinking? So he started cutting away and hey look, what is that on the ceiling? Seriously, I could see the whole c-section being performed through a light on the ceiling. Oh goody and yes I watched. Well to make things probably more dramatic than they really were, the doctor and the nurses got on the table and were trying to grab that kid out of me, they were tugging so hard, she was just way to far into me, wanting to go out the other way. I lost a lot of blood with them doing that. But, she came out and then I started feeling very dizzy and announced that I felt like I was floating. Now this part is what Brett told me next, he said that the doctor and nurses, my midwife all looked at each other like "Oh shit" and immediately began fixing the problem....and than I was fine.

How was my first born? She was born the exact same minute as the 6.8 that we had on 2-28-2001.
Immediately after I pushed her out and she was handed to me, the earth started shaking. I didn't think anything of it. I just thought the bed was shaking, until someone yelled earthquake! I held onto my daughter a little tighter and prayed it would stop and that nothing would fall on us. I have the newspaper and her birth records to prove it. In fact, she loves to sit in the earthquake toy at OMSI as it is a replica of that earthquake on that day. She is very unique.

22 mile run for 7/24/10

Not sure if there is much to say about my 22 mile run.
I ran solo. No friend, no IPOD, do dog. Great mental training.
Started at the Lower Macleay trail. I did an 2 mile out and back on the road, then ran up towards Leif and turned around after 4 miles, did my remaining on Wildwood via the Macleay entrance.
About mile 16, it turned agonizing, everything hurt. But, mostly my Achilles Tendon, my ankle and my insides (pelvic area). I'd have to say that on a scale of 1-10, it was an 8. I kept making fists, wanted to pick up a rock and squeeze it or a stick, but did not. I was not in the mood to say hello to anyone and I rarely looked at anyone. I walked up the hills after maybe 18. I did practice throughout the whole run, walking every 6 miles for 3 minutes. It helped and was refreshing. I also, did not load up my water pack super full, but re-filled after running Leif. That was helpful.
Now, it hurts my insides to get up and start walking and my ankle hurts only a little.
Running time 4:50. Another hard one.

Hello Sunshine

I kept meaning to delete this song from my Ipod because I thought it was corny the first few times that I heard it. Well it actually grew on me. It's one of those seriously happy, make you feel good songs. I like it. JH

Lyrics~
Hello sunshine it's been too long
since I felt your beautiful warmth upon my face
And how much have I missed
'Cause I've been focused on everything wrong
This road just felt so long
I forgot to lift my head to see you

Oh my lovely shining for me
Let my eyes see all the beauty
Oh-oh

Hello sunshine since the moment
That I felt your beautiful warmth
I knew that I'd do anything
To keep this feeling of you
My heart comes alive
Oh who could add a day to this life
By drowning every dark sky

Oh my lovely shining for me
Let my eyes see all the beauty
Oh-oh

Fill my dark skies
Make me see the light
Life is fine so bring in the sunshine
Oh-oh

Whoa-oh let in the sunshine
Whoa-oh let in the sunshine
Whoa-oh let in the sunshine
Let in the sunshine

22 mile run for July17th

Today, I met up with an actual human being, someone seriously willing to meet up with me and run 22 miles. It's not easy finding someone willing to do a hilly trail run consisting of 22 miles, someone who doesn't whine about it and runs my pace. (or close)
We met up at Wildwood, at Firelane 5. Firelane 5 is pretty far out away from civilization. You really don't find a whole lot of runners when running in that area. I wanted to start there because we didn't not want to run into the huge Marathon running group, that was scheduled to run up there. We decided or I decided and Dorothy agreed to it, that we would do an out and back 10 mile loop so that I would not have to carry 3 qts of water again on my tender back.
We first went left, down Saltzman and up Wildwood. Dorothy was at first leading, but being so close to her and only having a very small amount of vision, I was feeling dizzy and asked to lead. I was good and went the pace she was going. We turned around at the 5 mile loop.
Just before we got back to our car, I noticed that my watch was already at 10 mile, we hadn't even reached the cars yet. I figured my watch (stupid thing) lost signal somewhere and probably on the way back. So I stopped the timer, even though Dorothy said not to and we walked to the cars.
We both re-filled and I got my 1/2 of my sandwich out and starting eating and away we went, this time down the steep Firelane 5. By the time we got to the corner of F5 and WW, I heard voices, well here come the Marathoners. Luckily they were going a different way, they were headed toward Leif. One of the members asked us if this is the right way? (as if we know), but Dorothy said something to the effect "yes for you" and he said "what about you?" Silly Dorothy, she was wearing a Portland Marathon Clinic shirt and even sillier, that I almost wore the same shirt that morning.
We then went left on WW and and traveled for about 5.5 miles and stopped and actually sat and I got out my other 1/2 sandwich and she got out her gu and away we went for a final 6. I was really feeling it at about 18-19 miles and I was, believe it or not starting to hallucinate. I noticed a huge slug, got distracted by it and stepped over a strange leaf that I thought had moved, almost looked like a squirrel tail and it made me jump. Dorothy wonders if there had been a mouce. Then, another time, I thought I saw a butterfly go by my head. Oh brother.
Well, we finally made it to Firelane 5 and just walked up it, well okay, who seriously can run up that? Maybe on the flat part, but we didn't even bother.
I felt better today, than I did last week. I think it was a combination of the slower pace, more resting, more walk breaks and of course the dreaded icebath at the end when I got home, which left me shivering for a good 10 minutes.
There is something to be said about meeting up with a good friend once a week and talking for 6 hours. What a great way to build a friendship.
Scheduled run 22 miles, actuall run 22.19 (or so). Time 5:28, real time 6 hours.

20 mile run July 10, 2010

During every training period there is always at least one run that tests me. The question, "are you seriously going to be a big baby and quit" always comes up. Today, was that run.
I was schedule to run 20 miles. I got a late start, 9:17 AM because I wanted to say goodbye to my daughter, who was leaving for camp.
My plan was normal. I would do a 2 mile out and back on the streets as a warm up, head up Wildwood via Lower Macleay and finish off on Leif. Sometimes I switch and do the Leif run first, but I always find the ending the same, ummm ouch!
As soon as I got to the parking area of Lower Macleay, every spot was taken, no parking. So I had to park off of Thurman, but near the bridge. There was a race taken place there, Race for the Animals.
I messed up and only did 1 mile out and back and didn't realize it till I was at the stone house. Which, by then, I passed a whole lot of runners and my face was dripping with sweat. Hot day. I also quickly learned my mistake, one that I always do and don't know how to get pass...too much water. Today I was carrying 3 qts. on my back, a back that has been sore for days because of the one night that I slept on it. (That's a no no, need to sleep on my side) Because of this weighted water that I refused to dump out, I could feel a soreness in my calves already at mile 5. But, the run went smoothly up to Nature trail or my mile 7 and I sipped my water here and there. At the Nature trail, I chose to sit down and grab my first 1/2 of PBJ sandwich, quickly realized the mosquito's wanted to eat me and got up and headed down towards No Mans Land. (If your asking what that is, please ask me, I will be glad to tell you.) I only went a 1/2 mile in and turned around, thankful I was turning around. Back up to Nature trail.
The rest of my time in Wildwood was pleasant. I kept thinking about other things to keep my mind off running. Plus, since I know exactly the mileage between certain spots...between Nature trail and that Mowark trail (sp?) between 53rd drive and Dogwood...dogwood to Wildcherry...Wildcherry to Birch...Birch to the park. Very entertaining.
Well, by the time I got to the park, I was thinking, okay no more, all done. Yeah whatever. I went to the bathroom, tried to splash water on my face, but the sink only allowed so much water to come out. What the? My eyes were burning. I sat down, grabbed my other 1/2 of my sandwich, did an out and back 1 mile, headed up the huge stairs of the bridge, which burned my legs and up and up and up to Leif. I found myself at this point and I do believe once on Wildwood, just stopping, for no reason and that voice in my head would ask "what are you doing, get going!" always entered. I hate that BITCH!!!! I found that I did the same thing a few other times on the trail and the evil twit entered my head again. If you know Leif, you know it's hilly and for along time, until you turn back. I eventually got to my turn around and realized oh yeah, going down, awwhhh this is nice. I got out of Leif and about 2 minutes later, my cell phone beeps. I think, Oh God it's a showing. (Selling our house) Oh, please don't be a showing, I just want to go home. Nope, not a showing. But it's my husband and he writes "at the pool" and so I did what any loving wife would do after running 20 miles. I replied back...."ass!"
I'll ask for forgiveness later.
J
